West Chester, PA: Penn Oaks Golf Club
This tight course has many tree lined holes (mainly pine trees) and a double cut of rough bordering the fairways. The course’s terrain is hilly, and some of the tee boxes are elevated. The large greens are undulating and medium speed. The signature hole is #14, a 457-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot up a dogleg right fairway with a thick tree-line protecting the right side of the hole. Walking is permitted before 9 AM on weekdays.

This course was built on hilly terrain, so you can expect some uneven lies. The narrow fairways are border an approach shot over water to the green. There are weekday specials available, which include a cart.

Avondale, PA: Hartefeld National Golf Course
This classic, traditionally-designed course was built on the surrounding natural terrain. Depending on the tee boxes you play from, this can be an easy or difficult course. Since the fairways feature generous landing areas, the main emphasis should be placed on approach shots. The signature hole is #6, a 198, par 3, requiring a tee shot over a pond to an extremely large, double-tiered green that slopes from front to back. Water hazards (lakes, creeks, ponds, and streams), along with some waste areas, come into play on ten holes. “Golf Digest” selected this course 6th among the “Top 10 Best New Upscale Courses” for 1996, and they also named it as the 15th “Best in State” course for 1997-98.

West Chester, PA: Hershey’s Mill Golf Club
This course was built on rolling terrain and features enough variety to challenge the most experienced of golfer. Water hazards come into play on four holes; out-of-bounds stakes line over half the holes. The large greens are undulating and fast, so three putting isn’t uncommon. Most of the fairways are tree lined and bordered by a double cut of rough.

This course provides enough variety of terrain to challenge all skill levels of golfer. There is water that comes into play on a couple of holes, and trees are scattered throughout the course. Avondale, PA: Loch Nairn Golf Course
This relatively challenging course was built on predominantly flat terrain. The fairways are narrow with most of them being tree lined. There are sand bunkers scattered throughout the design, and water hazards come into play on twelve holes. The greens are fairly large, sloped and fairly slow. The course starts out with a 350-yard, par 4, which calls for an approach shot over a creek. This same creek also crosses the fairway on the next two holes.

This eighteen hole facility offers the amenities of a private club. Built in 1966, the course was recently restored and is maintained to the highest standards. The facility, nestled in Chester County’s Great Valley, offers a classic layout with the great features of a traditional Philadelphia golf course. The fairways are tree lined. Four sets of tees provide a challenging round of golf for golfers of all skill levels.

This reasonably flat course is easy to walk. The fairways are tree lined, and the small greens are fast. In addition, water hazards come into play on six holes. Hole #6, a 403-yard, par 4, features a pond in front of its tee box and a fountain in the middle of its fairway.

Glen Mills, PA: The Golf Course at Glen Mills

The Golf Course at Glen Mills is linked directly to the Glen Mills School, founded in 1826, which is a residential facility for troubled youth. The course is a training facility for students in turf management and golf house operations. Revenues go to a student scholarship fund. The course, designed by Bobby Weed, has five sets of tee boxes, a warm up area and large putting green and is getting rave reviews from golfers in the area.

Honeybrook, PA: Honeybrook Golf Club
Located at the western tip of Chester County, Pennsylvania, Honey Brook Golf Club features a mixture of wide-open links, tree-lined fairways, subtle elevation changes and protected wetlands. The greens are generous, and offer a fair degree of undulation.The West Branch of Brandywine Creek winds its way through the course and provides a challenging water hazard. Kennett Square, PA: Kennett Square Golf & Country Club
This well-bunkered course in the rolling hills of Chester County has undulating and well-manicured greens. The fairways are narrow and water comes into play on nine holes. Holes #8 and #17 are the “sister holes” of Donald Ross. They share the same teeing ground and are the two most challenging par 4′s on the course. Kennett Square has hosted the U.S. Open Qualifier, the U.S. Women’s Open Sectional Qualifier, and the U.S. Junior Boys Qualifier over the last three years.

Chisel Creek was built by Niebur Golf, voted the 1998 National Builder of the Year and the same people who build Fieldstone Golf Club, an awesome private course in Delaware. This course was built in a wooded area. Water hazards come into play on one hole on the front nine, while the hilly back nine is best known for its tree-lined fairways. This club only has a limited amount of riding carts; therefore, these carts are reserved for persons with disabilities or for anyone with a medical excuse not to walk.

Oxford, PA: Wyncote Golf Club
Designed by renowned architect Brian Ault, Wyncote is a heathlands-style course offering generous bent grass tees, greens and fairways, blended with moguls, mounded bunkers, wetlands and windy rises to challenge every golfer. Paoli, PA: Waynesborough Country Club
This course was built on rolling terrain and has somewhat tree-lined fairways. There are several ponds and creeks that come into play on many holes. Guests are not allowed to play this course without the presence of a member. The 6,121-yard men’s tee also has a ladies’ course rating of 75.4 and a slope of 131. The greens are medium in size and speed.
